Vinegar can kill bacteria, eliminate fungi, soothe sunburns and jellyfish stings, soften skin and hair. It can stop a sore throat or ear infection before it has a chance to take hold. Vinegar remedies can relieve headaches, leg cramps and even dry up cold sores. It can eliminate dandruff and kill head lice.
Vinegar has been used since ancient times. While we don`t know for
certain when human beings started using fermented foods, it is
estimated that the use of vinegar and vinegar remedies started about
10,000 years ago.
In Asia there are text dating back to 1200 B.C. accounting the uses of vinegar remedies and food preparations. Later during the time of the dark ages, one important Asian healer named Wu Tzu-Mu is quoted as saying, "the things people cannot do without everyday are firewood, rice, olive oil, salt, soy sauce, green tea, and vinegar".
Hippocrates, the father of western, modern medicine, recommended the
use of vinegar with honey for coughs and bacterial infections. Roman
soldiers and peasants used it in ancient Roman times as a common daily
drink called posca. In Biblical times the wine that is often
talked about was really a hard vinegar that was used in the drinking
water to kill parasites to make the water drinkable.
It is speculated by some that the wine at the "Last Supper" was this
mixture of hard vinegar in water along with the bread. Some also
believe now that the vinegar that was offered to Jesus on the cross was
an act of kindness rather than the act of mockery that has been
supposed for much of Christian history.
A common drink of average people and Roman soldiers of the days of Jesus was that of hard vinegar in drinking water to purify it from parasites and make it safe to drink.
In World War 1, the wounds of soldiers were cleansed with vinegar and while it comes with a strong sting, it is still an effective disinfectant. Acetic acid,(vinegar), is used by pharmaceutical companies along with acetylsalicylic acid, (the synthetic form of salicylic acid from the bark of the willow tree), to make the common aspirin.
The Power of Vinegar!
Vinegar remedies for headaches has long been recommended by followers of folk remedies. As already mentioned, it is one of the two primary ingredients in the common aspirin, but can be used as a stand alone remedy. Simply soak a natural cloth of cotton and wrap around your head and leave until the headache has disappeared.
For sore throats vinegar remedies has been recommended for thousands of years. For a great homemade cough syrup combine equal amounts of vinegar and honey. As a gargle mix 2 teaspoons of vinegar together with 2 teaspoons of honey and a pinch of mineral salt or sea salt with 4 - 6oz, ( 200 - 300 ml), of warm water and gargle well for 1 - 2 minutes. Do this morning and evening until there is no sign of cough or sore throat.
Indigestion is not always caused from too much acid. It is often
caused from not enough stomach acid. Today we drink colas and other
sugary drinks that dilute our natural stomach acids that are used to
digest food. It is best when eating to drink as little as possible and
if you do drink, make it water or water with vinegar.
The best thing to
do is to drink a glass of water with 2 teaspoons of vinegar 12 minutes
before eating and refrain from drinking anything else for 30 minutes
after any meal. This is often all that is needed to end that terrible
case of heartburn and indigestion.
Do you wonder why health books tell you that food is energy,
but after eating all you want to do is sleep? While carbohydrates in
their natural state are our best sources of energy for the body and
mind, the highly processed ones are so quickly absorbed that they put
an excess of glucose that the body cannot use and so insulin is
generated which then takes too much of the glucose away leaving you
tired.
The drinking of the vinegar will not only help prevent
indigestion, but will slow down the absorption of highly processed
carbs that create an overflow of insulin into the body. Its this
infusion of quickly absorbed glucose from the processed carbs that
cause the excess insulin that ultimately leads to the sleepy feeling
you get after a big meal and can consequently lead to type 2 diabetes.
This is not a ticket to eating all the junk you want, but when you are
eating that kind of food try drinking a glass of water with 2 teaspoons
of vinegar 10 - 12 minutes before you start or drink it along with your
meal to slow down the absorption.
Having problems with body oder? While this may not be the end of
the world , it can certainly feel that way. An excellent vinegar remedy
for body oder is both the internal and external use of vinegar. My
American husband tells me it is most common for Americans to take
showers rather than baths.
But if you are suffering from excess body
oder you need to change to the Japanese tradition of bathing rather
than taking a shower. It may take a couple of extra minutes but with
the help of vinegar your body oder problems will soon become a
forgotten memory.
Fill you bath with warm water and put 1 - 2 cups of
vinegar along with 1/2 a cup of baking soda, ( for those of you that
are a little more adventurous, try your own supply of 4 day old urine
in place of the baking soda, this is an old Japanese secret for keeping
skin looking soft and young along with removing any issues of oder).
